UK Air Quality Monitoring Network
In order to comply with European Directives on the airborne concentration of trace metals the DETR requested that Casella identified suitable location for the monitoring of trace metals across the UK and installed suitable analysers. Alan Lloyd, whilst working for Casella was tasked with identifying these locations and arranging for the installation of Partisol 2025 air samplers.
The sites were to be located near to sites of high trace metal emissions and included such plant as Longannet coal fired power station in Scotland, Scunthorpe steel works in Yorkshire and a metal processing plant in the West Midlands. In all thirty Partisols were installed across the UK. The exact location of these samplers used dispersion modelling data, existing monitoring data, terrain and metrological information to identify probable highest ground level concentrations. Identification of suitable site owners was required before careful negotiations were entered into to secure a location that was accessible, had a power supply and was safe.
The network operated for many years and provided invaluable information for the management of air quality in the UK.
